In her recent assemblage works, Sheree Hovsepian expands her photography-based practice into sculptural mixed-media constructions that combine photographic fragments, ceramics, string, nails, and painted elements within shallow, artist-made walnut frames. These works continue her exploration of the body as a site of memory and identity, often presenting fragmented images of the female figure embedded within geometric forms such as spirals, arcs, and triangles that suggest psychological and physical boundaries. By layering tactile materials with photographic imagery, Hovsepian blurs the line between image and object, emphasizing themes of duality such as presence and absence, figure and ground, and concealment and exposure. Photography remains the conceptual anchor of the work, functioning as an index of lived experience while the assembled materials extend this idea into physical space, creating compositions that examine how bodies and identities are shaped by their environments.
