In Langston Hughes’ poem, Harlem Sweeties (1926), he celebrates the ‘rainbow-sweet thrill’ of the ‘fine sweeties’ of Sugar Hill. Smith gives tribute to Hughes as he celebrates the beautiful African American women of Harlem in his painting Fine Sugar Hill. The spirited and confident dancers move to the jazz blasting from a radio contrasted by the mellow music from the saxophone as the musician makes her way to the jazz cafe below.
