In Safe Haven, a woman holds her two children leaping through the swamp and reaching a kind of safe haven in a natural environment or agricultural community. Shrobe is thinking about her mobility as a dynamic mode of being that points to survival strategies and diasporic traditions used to transcend states of fixity, and to remain fluid within, underneath, and above in spaces of uncertainty. The title speaks to a desire for freedom and brings into question: who is in the safe haven, the mother, or the children who seem at ease in the comfort of their mothers’ arms?
